Wink Martindale’s fascination with radio began during childhood. Playmates may have aspired to being doctors, firemen or policemen, but Wink just wanted to be a radio announcer. His journey from a Jackson Sun paper carrier to a soda jerk at Baker’s Drug Store, to legendary status in radio and television began in his small hometown, Jackson, Tennessee.
“I think that I was born with a desire to be a radio announcer. I always had that great desire to sit behind a microphone. My first ‘mic’ was two paper cups attached to a string. It wasn’t long before I was sitting behind the real thing.” Wink Martindale
Since the early 1950s, Wink has interviewed thousands of musicians, many of who went on to become some of the world’s most iconic entertainers. From giving Elvis Presley his first TV appearance in 1954, to hosting over 25 games shows, producing television and recording music, Wink’s passion for life, entertainment, and radio hasn’t changed one bit.
Wink can be heard on KWXY Music Radio 6 days a week sharing music history, stories, interviews, and his experiences from over 70 years in broadcasting.
